Oh, JavaScript. Once a toy for animating menus and providing annoying pop-ups, the modern web would be nothing without it. While most people's experience with JavaScript is limited to client-side scripting, perhaps with the help from something like jQuery, JavaScript has matured. Using Google's V8 JavaScript engine, Node.js built from the ground up to be an asynchronous server-side platform for making cool things on the web.

In the span of an hour we'll take a look at the Node.js core and build a quick, real-time chat server (the "15-minute blog" of Node.js). We will touch on what middlewares are and why they're so cool. We'll touch very briefly on the "single page application" vs "traditional web application" debate. We'll have fun.

About the speaker:

Damon Toal-Rossi is a JS software engineer for Uber, where he works on internal support applications using Node.js, Backbone.js and Chaplin.js. When he's not doing that, he's doing something random like playing banjo, playing rugby, riding a bike, climbing, flying a plane, or... you get the picture.
